Welcome to the May Newsletter,
Most people think meditation is about having a perfectly quiet mind. It isn’t.
According to researchers at Emory University, meditation is actually a four-stage cycle:
Focus: Your attention is centered.
Mind Wandering: Your thoughts drift away.
Awareness: You realize you’ve drifted.
Shift: You gently pull yourself back to center.
The "Shift" is where the muscle grows.
We practice this in a quiet room so we can use it when life gets loud. As James Clear notes in Atomic Habits, every action is a vote for the person you want to become. When you "Shift" back to your goal, you are casting a vote for a more mindful version of you.
This month, practice the "Begin Again" game in these moments:
In Traffic: You’re angry -> You realize it -> Begin Again (Shift to calm).
In the Kitchen: Kids are yelling and you’re overwhelmed -> You realize it -> Begin Again (Shift to presence).
The Second Piece of Cake: You realize you’re eating it -> Don’t beat yourself up -> Begin Again (Shift to your goal).
It’s not a "one and done" game. It’s a "Begin Again" game. How many cycles can you complete today?
